Later that day, as Molly met her parents in the school hallway, she found out they had brought something far worse than pastries. “Why did you bring Dyandra?” she said weakly.

“We had to, Moll,” said Dad as Dyandra chewed his pant leg. Flesh-colored makeup had been poorly applied to her face and part of it had already come off on Dad’s leg. “Timothy had a date with Kaitlyn…”

“And we don’t want you kids to feel you have to put your lives on hold just because some of us are dead,” whispered her mom.

“Muuuhhm,” said Dyandra.

“Oh sorry, sweetie. Or your afterlives on hold either,” Mom said a little too loudly. Nearby, several kids looked up, confused. Dyandra snarled at them, and they quickly moved away.

“Okay, let’s get this over with,” sighed Molly.

The golden late afternoon sun streamed into the classroom as the Dades minus Timothy filed in. Two seats were set before Ms. Lewis’s desk, and she greeted them with a smile. “Oh, I see we have one more guest! Let me grab another chair.”

“Ah, yes. About that,” said Dad. “We actually need three more.” He strolled over and picked up a couple of stacked chairs.

“Oh! You didn’t mention that anyone else was coming,” said Ms. Lewis.

“Well, you see, it was kind of hard to explain on the phone,” said Mom.

Ms. Lewis dropped the chair she was carrying. Marty caught it just in time to stop it clattering. Spotting the floating chair, Ms. Lewis took a step back. She made a strange squeaking noise and sat on her desk, her hands shaking. “What is happening?” she finally spluttered.

“It’s kind of a long story,” said Mom.

“Right,” said Marty, as Ms. Lewis’s phone beeped. She checked her phone and made another squeaking noise.

“Are you okay?” said Molly. Ms. Lewis blinked for a few moments, shook herself, and then looked up.

“I think,” she said, “you had better start from the beginning.”

The Dades did indeed start from the beginning, which meant that the meeting went on long past when everyone else had left the building. After her initial shock, Ms. Lewis seemed, while still startled, at least accepting of the situation. She even agreed to grade Marty’s homework, much to Molly’s internal dismay.

“Thank you so much for being so understanding,” said Mom once they were finished. “I know that our situation is a little…unconventional.”

“Not at all,” said Ms. Lewis. “After teaching at Roehampton for nearly ten years, I’ve seen families come in all shapes and sizes. And don’t worry. I promise to keep this all strictly confidential.”

The Dades stood up, put their chairs away if they had corporeal form or poltergeist powers, and finally got ready to leave. Molly rubbed her eyes. It had been a long day.

“Well, if that’s everything, I’ll see you tomorrow, Molly and Marty,” said Ms. Lewis. “Unless there’s anything else you want to tell me?” While the Dades looked at one another and shook their heads, they didn’t notice Ms. Lewis staring directly at Molly.

On some level, Molly so, so wanted to blurt out everything about the curse.
